UYW June 2020: It's NOT Mac N" Cheese

Hey-O friends!
Today's post is a writing challenge created by Karen@Baking In A Tornado. 10 participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words for someone else to use in a post. All words must be used at least once. All posts will be different as each writer has received their own original set of words. No blogger knows who received their words or in what direction the writer will take them. Until, today.

My words are: control, grass, medical, rebate, furious

They were submitted by Karen@ Baking In A Tornado Thank you, my friend!

I've never been the kind of person who likes to shop just for the sake of "shopping." All of the people, all of the choices...it makes my anxiety go through the roof just thinking about it.

The introvert in me appreciates the conveniences and solitude of online shopping. This has never been more true than in these past few months with the Covid Pandemic. Some online stores deliver within a few days, some even take coupons and rebates. Others can come to your car and drop off stuff in your trunk! It's borderline magical. We've been able to buy our groceries, clothing, medical supplies, and many other things without crowds or time limits.  Hey, online in April, we even bought a new bed!Who knew shopping could be that easy?

My favorite thing about online shopping though, has been the ability to keep my Grams (age 90), who lives back in Michigan, well fed, adorably dressed, and hopefully needing for nothing more than company. She'll always call and update me with the food that she made from her Amazon pantry boxes, or about the conversations she has with the delivery people that are kind enough to put her boxes safely on an indoor porch.
***
I was returning to my house from a doctor's appointment when I saw that I had 2 voicemails. One was from my brother, Charley (who also lives in Michigan) and the other was from Grams.

Charley: "Hey Shell, Grams called me because she got some large boxes and can't bring them in the house. She's worried because the delivery people left them outside on the grass. It's raining here and she needs my help. Just wanted you to know that's what's up."

I text Charley: "No worries. I was trying to surprise her with that Mac N' Cheese she loves. I bought a 24 pack. It's probably awkward to lift. Thx so much for taking care of it. Wear your mask!"

Then I listen to my Gram's voicemail:
Grams: "Shelly, some boxes came and they're really big. It's starting to rain. Charley is going to try to help me...Did you buy me a new piano or something?...Call me, this is Grams." (She always tells me who she is at the end of her messages.)

That's weird, I thought. I was starting to call Grams back when a text came in from Charley.
Charley: "Um, it's NOT Mac N' Cheese."

When I saw the photo, my heart fell into my stomach. I knew exactly what was in those boxes. I could NOT believe it.

I must have accidentally sent my Grams the new bed I ordered for our home!

To Michigan, Not Utah.

You know, in all these years, I could have mistakenly sent her a yoga mat or some pop-tarts, but no. It had to be three boxes of an assemble-yourself bed!

It was completely my fault. I had sent Grandma something from this same online retailer before. When I ordered the bed for me, I must have seen her address and never thought twice about it. Grams had no control over what to do with the bed, so my brother brought it to his house until we could straighten everything out. I was beyond furious with myself. I told my husband that we'd just keep the same bed we've had for 20 years and I'd give this new one to Charley or Grams. But, truthfully, it was never going to fit in Gram's cute house and it definitely wasn't a style my brother would embrace. It's a green four poster. Yep, green.

So we returned it back to the retailer. When they credited our account, my husband said to order another one if I really loved it and he'd stand OVER me while I bought it, but they didn't have another green bed. I tried again a few days later and guess what? They did have one! (pretty certain it was the one I returned). After three weeks of back and forth, with me holding my head as low as it could go, that bed finally arrived at my house.

"You sure you want to go with green?" asked the man, while unpacking the boxes.
"Are you kidding me?THIS is the last green bed we are ever buying! Ever!" I say.

Or, you know, until one of the kids needs a bed.

BTW, my Grams laughed at the whole thing and asked when her Mac'N Cheese would arrive.
"Sooner than my bed, Grams."

Have a restful weekend, friends!
Love, Michele

Fly on the Wall: July 2015

Hello, Friends!  Welcome to the July Fly on the Wall Group Challenge. This month, 12 awesome bloggers and I are describing what it would be like if you were to take a peek inside our homes....

Have a "look" around mine, and then go visit the other blogger's pages. There's always something fun, sentimental, or better yet, embarrassing going on. It's like your house, only we're admitting to the craziness. You have our permission. Buzz on over!

Cast:
Me
The man
Alex, the eldest
Micah, Alex's husband
C., The middle (son, 17)
J., The youngest (son, 10)

The fly on the wall would have to be using his eyes a lot around here. We spend most of our days keeping in contact with our family via texts. It's not ideal, but it's the way things are for us right now. Still, I'm glad for the phones that keep us in reach. Here are a few of this month's favorite texts. I'm always touched that my family can keep the sarcasm alive, even when we're not in the same house.
***

Alex: So. I'm being asked for thirtieth time if you're ever going back to "work".  Am I supposed to go with the same response?
Me: Which is?
Alex: That you're perfectly happy spending your days collecting drug money and making our father work his fingers to the bone?
Me: I don't know. Collecting drug money sounds like I'm contributing. But I guess I'm still good with that.
***
C.: Mom. Who is your favorite child?
Me: Robbie? My long lost son, is that you?
C.: Wrong answer. If you would have said that it was me, I would be bringing this home:
Me: Ask me again!
C.: Who is your favorite child?
Me: Robbie, is that you?
"C. has left the conversation."
***
Alex: (getting her new classroom ready) Should I write my first name inside all of the books I bought? Or my last name? My phone number? What did you write inside yours?
Me: "I wrote: Don't steal this book or I will find you. You will think you got away with it, but one dark night, I WILL find you, and make you give this book back to me."
Alex: So you weren't beloved. Everyone was just terrified of you?
Me: Pretty much.
***

Alex: Holy hot, mom! It's 102 degrees. How are we supposed to function in this heat?
Me: Take a lesson from your family...
***
Me: So. This is what happens when I'm doing laundry and trip over the crate my husband left out this morning.
Mark: You know that you're texting your husband, right?
Me: Am I?
Mark: Ouch!
ME: Really? That's all you have to say?
Mark: Um, at least you can hop around on your good foot to put the laundry away?
Two Hours later.
Mark: Hello? Is it safe to come home?
***
Random texts that don't get a response:
These are texts that are either rhetorical or meant to cause a blood pressure spike.
Alex to Me:"Should I get a perm?"
Mark to me:"By WHOLE GRAIN, do you mean the soft, white Wonderbread? That's what I think you mean."
Mark to me: "Do you mind if the new fridge sticks out about six inches into the hallway?"
C. to Me:"Whatever you do, don't go in my room!"
Alex to me:"Is it bad to wear tights in July?"
C. to Me: "If I'm not back by dawn, delete my internet history."
Me to Alex: "A family Taco cart. Don't say no. Just think about it."
Me to C.: "I'm starting to wonder if the moon landing really WAS staged..."
C. does NOT kid around when it comes to Space, so I must do that for him.
***

We had a plumber working here for hours trying to hook up a water softener. Our house was not fitted for one, and of course, everything had to be brought up to code. Ugh...
I was downstairs working in my shop which is next to the utility room.
Me: (texting Mark, who was upstairs) Hey. The plumber just came in and asked what I do in here. I showed him the shop and gave him my card.
Mark: Did you invite him to dinner? We're paying him a ton of money. By the hour.
Me: So. I shouldn't have given him a discount code?
Mark: Did he give you a discount code?

Finally:
Group Text:

Alex: I just spent the whole day lesson-planning. I still have two papers to write :(
C.: I just found out I have to close all weekend.
Alex: Thanks for making us responsible people, mom and dad.
C.: Yeah, thanks. We should be out partying with our friends.
Mark:
"Alex has left the conversation."
"C. has left the conversation."

Fly over and say, "Hey!" to this month's fly participants!

Happy "Love your family, wherever they are", friends!

Fly on the Wall: October 2014

Hey there!  Welcome to the October Fly on the Wall Group Challenge.

Why is your dame moving her lips?

All right, I don't WANT to chalk this up to living in Utah, but I just don't know anymore. If you look up feminism and our state in the news as of late, you're going to find some very passionate articles. Read a few if you get a chance and then we can discuss.

I know this doesn't happen EVERY where here, but I swear to you, I'm a magnet for sexism.

My current (actually, ongoing) issue is with salesmen. It doesn't matter if I'm buying an appliance, a car, or in today's instance, furniture. It always starts the same way. Without fail, the salesmen comes up to us, but only looks my husband in the eyes.
Salesman: (staring at Mark) "Can I help you folks with something?"
Mark: (pointing to me) "Well, we gave our living room furniture to our daughter, so we're looking for some new stuff."
Salesman: (to Mark) "Are you looking for anything in particular?"
Mark: (again, pointing to me). "I have no idea. Michele has done most of the research. I'm leaving it up to her."
Salesman: (rocking back and forth on his heels, with his hands in his pockets, he leans once again towards Mark) "Well, what does the little lady like?"

Sweet father of upholstery. What year is this? Will this man's short-sleeve shirt and clip-on tie begin to melt if he has to look at me? I could have been holding a huge wad of hundred dollar bills whilst pointing to a sofa and I'd bet that salesman would have slapped me on the behind and asked me to make him a drink.

When the last salesperson saw the disgust in my eyes, he turned away from me and whispered to Mark in a, 'You poor man. You've got one of THOSE women..' faces and said in a singsong voice, "You know what they say! Happy Wife, Happy Life! "
If I had one of the man parts required to speak to these guys, I would have pulled it out and beat them with it. But then, I may have messed up my pretty dress.

Three furniture stores. Each out of huge sales. Each getting a letter to the highest ranking female I can find.

Long story short, we found our living room set at an out-of-the way non big-box furniture place. Mark sat down on a comfy sofa while I picked out what I wanted, arranged for the delivery and paid the bill. Guess what? My uterus didn't even fall out.

My cute new stuff.

Some things never change:
I was scanning over an article I had written for a friend's blog forever and a day ago. Life got in the way, so it didn't get posted. In it, I was listing 25 things I'm always nagging my children about. The funny thing is, the list still works today. ALL OF IT.
SO, I'm sharing it.. Any month of the year, a FLY could hear me yelling saying these things: (If you visit this blog often, you'll already be somewhat familiar with the list.)

1. Did you brush your teeth today?
2. When was the last time you got in the shower?
3. Where are you going now?
4. When will you be home?
5. Who ate my candy bar?
6. How long have you actually had to finish the assignment that’s due tomorrow?
7. Will a how-to meeting help our family learn to replace toilet paper?
8. Why are you hoarding wet towels?
9. Where is your pillowcase?
10. Where are all of my forks?
11. Are you really going to wear that?
12. Where’s your jacket/scarf/coat/boots?
13. Can you tell me this story in 30 words or less?
14. What were you thinking?
15. Who hit who first?
16. Why did you say that to your brother?
17. Why did you do that to your sister?
18. Do I look pleased?
19. Do I care what your friends get to do?
20. Did anyone in the public witness this?
21. Did you say “Thank You”?
22. Did you say you were sorry?
23.  Where did you get THAT idea?
24. What is that smell?
25. For the love of all that is holy, WHY?

More quotes from random family members:

"Come to our house. If we're not crafting or eating, we're yelling. All of those things are fun to witness."

"If you're giving away the sofas, are they perhaps being accompanied by the side tables as well?"

"At the checkout I found a bag of Jolly Rancher Lolly pops. I was instantly disappointed. Who wouldn't name those things Jolly Pops? I would buy those in a heartbeat. I mean, I bought them any way, but I'd do it again with a smile on my face."

"Are we ever going to eat the shrimp in the freezer or are they just going to become one with the ice?"

"I'm not here to say 'Hi', I just need a fork."

"Send that sleep-machine back. The white noise sound makes me think that someone's going to tell CarolAnn to stay away from the light."

"Sure mom. We promise to help clean-up after 'craft night'."
Mmm hmm.
They didn't keep their promise. The project coming together here will be in a new post on Tuesday. Stop by to check it out :)

Day 19 of Forty- Grateful Sunday :)

Hello friends! Here are my five thank-yous for the week:

1. The man and I ventured all the way to IKEA yesterday. (It's about an hour away, so you have to know ahead of time that the whole journey is going to take up a good chunk of your day.) After walking around forever and two minutes, I found myself exhausted and sitting in the middle of the cafe, checking out the treasures in my over sized yellow bag. I found those cute little lemonade bottles with the stoppers and metal clips and was pretty excited, since I'd been eyeing them in another store for quite a while. When I looked up from the bag-o-goodies, I saw that man of mine, soda and silverware in one hand and my steaming hot coffee cup in another. Right there walking toward me is my grateful number one. Yeah, he's my husband. Sometimes he's my shopping or DIY-ing partner. But lately, he's been what I've needed most; a really good friend.

2. The eldest came to help me teach a class of first graders on Friday. It was amazing to be teaching in my very first classroom (circa 1996), with not only my youngest in the class, but with my daughter who also had attended first grade in the very same room. Her teacher was the person who adopted my family when we moved to Utah. The world is an extremely, wonderfully small place sometimes. Memories flooded back and helped me to relish blessings both in the past and in the present.

3. A bunch of students on Friday noticed that I colored my hair and didn't even laugh or point at me. Sure, their ages range from 6-12, but every little kind thing counts. Especially when a fifth grader tells you, "Wow. You don't look so old, Mrs. M."   Me: Winning!

4. Me, writing this blog to you at 7:30 p.m. and STILL seeing daylight!

5. We have most of the "theatre-like" room done. The walls are bare and the sofas are in large need of some pillow-love, but it is the man's baby, and he's pretty happy. I think it's because his office is currently cotton candy pink, but that's another story for another time.

I told you I'd leave a few pics, so here they are. Remember, everything is a work-in-progress :)

Before: Here is the very messy playroom, peppered with a ton of teaching stuff.

After: It might look as if IKEA has taken ownership of the room, but that's okay. The storage is wonderful!

Before: The back wall, full of miscellaneous toys. P.S. The room was a blue/grey color.

After- The "Concession Area." We thought it would be fun to have a place to store drinks and snacks. We are still those strict parents who make the kids ask before consuming any of that; if only to make sure they're not eating mama's stuff :)

Before: Here is the only window in the room. It makes for a dark place, which I guess is why it's the theatre. This was the only source of light I had when teaching.. Ack!

After: You know, if you're going to complain about lack of light, you really should go out and buy yourself a pair of black curtains..and then close the blinds ;) Here is the apex of excitement for the man and me. An air hockey table. We have been known to push small children out of the way at Chuck-E-Cheese to play this game. The kids get a chance to enjoy it if we're not around.

Before: Here is a pic I'm using as an example to show you the careful measures I take when painting. Push everything into the middle of the room, open the paint can and GO!!!!

After: Here is the same view with our IKEA couch and Target game chairs.  We assembled it all and only had a handful of screw left over ;) This arrangement works well because the game chairs are much shorter. We can all watch a movie and be able to see the screen. Notice the eggplant wall, bare as a baby's bottom. I need to hang some pictures...soon. It's kind of driving me crazy. Notice that the boys could care less about decor issues...

After: Here's a view from the sofa on the back wall.
That's the room. (We are still contemplating hanging that TV.) What do you think?

Happy Sunday, friends :)

The more things change...

I moved (with the man's help) my living room furniture around today. We dusted and swept everything. We rotated the rug, moved and reconnected the entertainment center and reconfigured the placement of the chairs and sofas. At least five different ways. Maybe six. Okay, eight, tops.

I tried to explain to the man where I thought everything should go. I knew what I wanted in my mind, but the space wouldn't cooperate. Now, the man knew my arrangement plan wasn't going to work. Apparently, it was "mathematically impossible." Yes, I believe air quotes were used. He tried using his outstretched arms and then a measuring tape to explain exactly why it wasn't going to work. He's a spatial magician, remember?

He's also an abnormally patient man. He wasn't looking for an I-told-you-so moment. He was simply hoping his wife would make up her insane mind so he could sit down in time to watch his football game.

After forever and a minute of insisting we try one more arrangement, I finally hung my head in defeat. Without saying a word, we put it all back. Exactly where it was hours before. Ugh.

On the bright side, (Really? A bright side? Now I'm just reaching, folks...) the benefits of this experience are two-fold.  First, my living room is now properly dusted. Yes, yes it is. Second? The man can't file for divorce on a Sunday.

Pledge and Swiffers- one point. Any sense of accomplishment and three hours of my (and the man's) life- zero.

Cheers to a productive workweek, friends.

Monday Makeover II

So, my mother-in-law let me take home this table a few years ago. (No, the woman NEVER stops giving..) She even had a new top made for it because she rocks like that. I have to be honest and say that I have loved it ever since I saw it in its original state. I thought the old paint gave it character.. I had it in my living room for a long time. But one day, I noticed the paint was literally falling off onto the floor. When I picked up the pieces of paint, they would turn into powder. All I could think of was "LEAD PAINT!", and perhaps the realization that the man's mother might have an alternative motive with all this gift-giving...

-and HERE is a picture of an organizer the man bought for my birthday last year. A hint maybe to, you know, be more organized? You have been following the blog and saw the before shot of the closet yesterday, right? Even though there was important "stuff"stuffed in those cubicles, there was no order to it at all. I really do love this little piece of furniture, but still haven't used it properly.

And then that man went and helped me make a teeny tiny, fantastic office...He actually helped make the stripes, remember?

Now I know this is going to be shocking to all of you, but I decided to paint the table and organizer. Yes. More paint. Even all those little annoying cubicle-thingies.. (what in the world was I thinking?)

I used the last of the aqua paint from the room and mixed it with another quart of creamy-white paint. When it was finished, the man helped spray the whole thing with a lacquer spray paint. I know you can't see it from the pictures, but it has a soft shine to it. Perfect for a very girly office. Will it stay organized? Your guess is as good as mine.. (if your guess is "No!")

Here is the finished product..

I'm not sure if I'll regret painting that old red table.  For now though, it's exactly what I want.

Have an organized week for me, friends :)

Monday Makeover...

Hey friends! I hope you've enjoyed your Labor Day weekend. Me? I was sicker than a dog. (Where does that saying come from, anyway? Do dogs get more sick than humans? Do they have higher temperatures or require more bottles of Pepto or NyQuil? I'm guessing no) Ugh. I am so glad to have had an extra day to recuperate...

Here's a little makeover I did on a pair of chairs. My mother-in-law apparently has a whole barn-full of goodies waiting for some spray-paint love. (How did I not know this sooner?) I think she found these at a yard sale..not sure. They were just sitting in the barn like a lonely set of twins, begging for some attention...

When the man's mom asked if I'd like them, I thought for......oh stop. You know I took them faster than she could finish asking. I don't know where they are going to go, but one thing I'm sure of? They were free and Holy-set-of-wrought-iron!! Who loves "free" more than me?

Two super-heavy, bottomless FREE chairs..

I wasn't going to do the measuring on those chair bottoms. I'm pretty sure people would actually like to sit on them and not fall through..The seats are what we in Utah call "skewampous." I think Utahns mean skewed or crooked, but I love that word....

The only thing I purchased for the project. The foam was 6 dollars for a two pack. Woo Hoo! Oh yes, only a teacher would use a fat Crayola marker to draw professional lines. I do what I can...

Upholstery fabric I had on hand for bags...

The fabric LOOKS even...

Until I get my spatially challenged hands on it.

Finally, some beautiful, left-over red paint that I bought for a bookshelf. The eldest helped me with the painting, but due to the 100 degree weather, no pictures were allowed of the process :) I promise, we DID paint them :)

C'mon...how cute are they? BTW, if you were thinking the same thing as the man and wondering why I didn't leave them yellow since I painted the last set that color...I say, "completely different shade, darlin'." Duh! .....Ahem. Just kidding. Were it not for the man, those cute chairs would have fabric bottoms only, and I can only surmise lawsuits galore..

Have a great short-work-week, friends :)

Tea Table

Hey-O friends! I hope you're enjoying your weekend...

I thought I'd show you one of the projects I've been working on.. I had all of the materials on hand so this revamp was free. That's right. My garage is now missing three cans of spray paint and my fabric stash is a yard or two lighter of older material. Woo Hoo! It's called progress, right?

Here is a short picture story of what I used to make a fun table for enjoying a nice cup of tea...

This is my cute wrought iron set. We never use it because the paint comes off on your clothes and it has some sharp edges that snag. Plus it's iron. In the sun. It's hot and it burns your.....blah blah blah

A few pages of sand paper and every single drop of the spray paint I bought for some other project......

I used the yellow fabric for the seat cushions and black for a table cover. It is light and airy enough for summer. I know, black is not exactly a summer color, but it's so fun! The polka dot ribbon was used to hang a chandelier. The picture would better if I actually had candles, but...

It's cute, right?

If you knew how spatially challenged I am, you would be doing cartwheels after seeing how well those round cushions fit.  Bony bottoms rejoice!!

If it didn't feel like the Apocalypse outside with the heat, I might have spent a bit more time setting that table. This is what I could do with ice blocks under my arms....

Finally, a picture of the best actors/helpers in the world. They are not at all making fun of their mother and her tea table. mmmhmm. BTW, the youngest was inside with the air conditioning, eating a Bomb Pop and contemplating locking the door...

Keep Cool, friends :)
