Fly On The Wall: January 2014

Hey there!  Welcome to the January Fly on the Wall Group Challenge. This month, 14 awesome bloggers and I are describing what it would be like if you were to take a peek inside our homes....

Have a "look" around mine, and then go visit the other blogger's pages. There's always something fun, sentimental, or better yet, embarrassing going on. It's like your house, only we're admitting to the craziness. You have our permission. Buzz on over!

Cast:
The man
A., the eldest (daughter, 20)
C., The middle (son, 15)
J., The youngest (son, 9)
Henry and Lila- The dogs

Happy Birthday to yooooooooou. Ugh!:

My poor husband. His birthday is the last day of the year. By that time, we are all sick of wishing and singing and wrapping anything.  On one hand, even he is tired of it all. On the other, it is New Year's Eve. We usually spend the evening hosting friends and celebrating with the family. It's always a lot of fun. This year, however, he was turning 40. (This is where the fly on the wall has to follow along.)
To celebrate, I invited our friends on a trip across the state line. Yes, we are rebels. There are casinos and restaurants in the great state of Nevada. It's very grown up. Our friends have 3 children as well, so we love to get away every now and then and have a good time. It was packed this visit (New Year's Eve). The men were playing on the tables and my friend and I were betting big on the penny machines. Being the wild kids we are, we all ended up playing UNO in our hotel room. That ball seems to drop later and later every year. Our friends ended up leaving at 12:01. We are old.
The man's birthday was over. I could tell he had fun. The rest of the "romantic" night went something like this.
Me: "Honey…I have something for you." I reach deep into my tote bag and pull out a huge…bag of Chex mix.
The Man: "No you did not! Have they been opened yet? The little pieces are intact?"
I nod and reach further into my bag.
Me: "I also brought…Red Vines. Still fresh and untouched."
His smile is bigger.
I finally help him undress and push him on the bed. He backs up to the pillows with the Chex mix in one hand and the Licorice in the other. I lean over and softly whisper into his ear..
Me "My final gift? You get this whole bed to yourself." I jump onto the other bed and curl up.
No dog hair. No blanket hogging. No kids interrupting his snores. One night. One whole night!
Best. Birthday. Ever.

The truth and nothing but the truth:

I moved some pantry items into a glass-fronted cabinet.
A.: "Wow. When you look at it that way, we seem unhealthy"
The truth: We are unhealthy.

J.: "Look at all of that frosting! There's a bunch of flavors. Mom, didn't we buy a chocolate kind?"
I shrug.
The truth: Some nights are hard. A tub of frosting and a good novel can do wonders for a girl's sanity.

C.: "Mom, how did you get that nasty bruise on your leg?"
Me: "Hmm. I'm not sure. You know how I'm always bumping into things. Maybe I did it during yoga."
The truth: I bumped hard into the dresser while running across the room. The man had just come through the door announcing it was "Dunkin Donut Wednesday."

The doctor: (at my latest appt.) "Hmm. Your weight is down. Have you changed your diet? Your activities?"
Me: (shaking my head) "Nope. Not one thing."
The truth: It's inexplicable. Maybe it's yoga. And Dunkin Donut Wednesday. Bending, frosting and books. Hey, I found a lifestyle change worth sticking to!
Downward facing dog.

I don't know 'bout birthin' no babies!:

Me: (sitting straight up,in the middle of the night) "OMG! My water just broke!"
The Man: (sitting up just as fast) "What???"
We both get up and find that Henry has emptied out his whole bladder on the bed and apparently, me.
The Man: "I don't know whether to scream at Henry or hug him."
Me: (changing out of my soaked pajamas) "For all that is holy, I'm not having a baby! Give that dog a steak!"
***
J: "Mom, I have to talk to you. I was talking to (so and so) and they told me about... sex."
Me: (heaving and choking and ready to kill someone) "What do you mean? Like whether we are male and female? Boy or girl? That's what sex is. That's what you're asking, right? (my voice has hit every octave by now.)
J: "No." (looking flushed) "She told me about when a man and a woman sleep in a bed together…"
Me: "Is it hot in here? Did you hear the doorbell? Have you seen my inhaler?"
J: "You said I could ask you anything. I just want to know where the baby comes from after that."
Me: (Counting to ten. Who is the child poisoning my little boy with this stuff? Wasn't I just yelling at my baby to put away his Lego undies?) I think and breathe, breathe and think.
"That is a really good question. I've been wondering that myself. Let's ask Dad when he comes home."
It's called co-parenting people. I can only do so much.

My babies
Future jobs for my family:

Based on scientific research, i.e., our running mouths:

The Man: "Do you want to go to the beach?"
Me: "We can't. We have a wedding to plan for."
The Man: "We need to get away."
Me: "What about your job?  I know things have been up in the air…"
The Man: "I want to go."
Me: "But I just super-sized these french fries!"
The Man: "Do you want to go or not?"
Me: "I guess so. He## yes, I want to go!"
Future Job: The man and I? Homeless, happy beach bums.

A. (fighting with her brother) "I couldn't care less about that story if I were fast asleep."
Future Job: Supreme Court Judge

C. (Fighting with his brother) "I'm tired of you asking all of those questions. All of the answers you need can be found on the internet. When you don't use the computer it's like saying Steve Jobs lived and died for nothing."
Future Job: Motivational Speaker

J. (getting ready for school) "Where is that yellow pencil? The one with the #2 on it? Once you sharpen them they last for a really long time. I need to find that pencil."
Future Job: SAT and ACT tester (pencil hander-outer)

Finally, Some Random Quotes:

C. to me: "Great, mom. You moved dad's leather chair into your bedroom. Now, we'll never see him."

J. to me: "Of course you have nice handwriting. You've been doing cursive for 99 years!"

J. to the man: "What do you say we make it a FIVE day weekend?"

A. to her fiance': "Do these pants make me look fat? (he shakes his head no). Why? Do you think I'm skinny? Don't you like my big butt? (he says he does.) So. You think I have a big butt?" Let the games begin.

Me to anyone who will listen: "Yes, we're having a wedding. Yes, It's in August. Yes, she is ready. Yes, we love him. No, she is not going to have a baby. Yes, she is finishing her degree. Yes, I would love if she'd stay down the hall from me forever. No, I haven't stopped crying. Yes, I do have my therapist AND my pharmacist booked solid for the two weeks prior to and after the wedding."

My baby girl is getting married. Help me.

Fly on the Wall #3

Hey friends!  Welcome to the 3rd Fly on the Wall Group Challenge. This month, 14 VERY brave bloggers and I are describing what it would be like if you were to take a peek inside our homes....

Have a "look" around mine, and then go visit the other blogger's pages. There's always something fun, sentimental, or better yet, embarrassing going on.. It's like your house, only we're admitting to the craziness. You have our permission. How often can one say that?

If you were a fly on the wall at my house this month, this is what you would have witnessed:

Cast:
Me- Yeah, that would be yours truly.
The Man- My husband
A.- The eldest child (daughter)
C. The middle child (son)
J. The youngest (son)

Regarding Lent:

The Middle Child: "I'm giving up being poor."
The Eldest: "I'm giving up sweets. No, wait. I'm giving up cake and cookies. I have a REAL Valentine this year. I am NOT giving up candy. Or chocolate. Or whatever "he" gets me..."
Me: "We're giving up fast food."
The Youngest (yelling): "Well what are we going to eat for dinner, then??"

The Blog:

Me: "I have to write about what funny things we said this month."
The Youngest: "I've said multiple funny things..just today!"

The Youngest: "I want something fun to do. No one is listening to me. A. and C. are always on their phones. Dad is always on his computer and mom is always on her blog!"
The Middle (and now grounded) child: "You just need an imaginary friend. We have them too. They live in our electronics. Yours probably lives under your bed."

Me: "Will one of you make a blog header for me? I need something new."
The middle child: "I'll do it."
Me: "Okay. I'll tell you what I want..."
The man (laughing and shaking his head) "Yeah, C. Good luck with that."
3 hours later....
Me: "It kind of looks like a little kid made it."
The Middle Child: "Well, I thought you wanted people to think YOU made it."
Me: "Very funny. Now your initials are going under it."

From the Living Room:

The Man to the eldest: "You know, as long as you're living under OUR roof..."
The Man to me: "Never tell my parents you heard that."

Me to The Man: "I am not going to sleep until I finish this puzzle."
The man: "That is going to take you all night. You can't finish that before bed."
Me: "Watch me!"
He doesn't. He goes to bed like a normal person would.
Me to the Middle Child: "I will give you $5 dollars to help me finish this puzzle."
The Middle: "But I have homework..."
Me (looking at the clock): "Okay. Twenty bucks."
The middle child: "Well, this piece goes here and this piece..."
Yeah. We finished it.

Playing the alphabet game with the three kids..
The youngest: "I have 'R'. My name is Roger. I come from Rrrrr..Rogerville, and I sell rrrrWrinkled people."
The middle: "That's not right. Wrinkled starts with..."
Me: (Making my mean-mom face). "Shhh. That's okay...."
The eldest (of course gets 'W'): "My name is Wilma. I live in Wyoming and I sell.....wrinkled people."
The older two laugh. The youngest is frustrated.
Me: "I need a drink chocolate."

That awkward moment... (this month)

When you run in your towel to let your daughter in the house, open the door and realize it's the mailman. This is why he usually stays in his Mail truck.

When your daughter comes home announcing a job change, saying she's ready to be a grown-up and you are putting together a puzzle with Red Vines coming out of your mouth. Oh, and Spongebob is on.

You move the kitchen island because you're ready for a change. You realize there is a ton of crap under it. You contemplate the situation and realize the vacuum is upstairs. You move the island right back where it was, matching up the dust spots exactly.

When you decide to practice yoga in the living room and realize there is more crap under the sofas than there was under the kitchen island.

When your three children are screaming at the top of their lungs while wrestling on the couch and all you can do is smile...and take pictures to bribe them with later.

The man: :"Don't pay any attention to J. screaming in the bathroom. C. is helping him pull out his tooth."
Me: "Was it really that loose?"
The man: "Probably not."

The eldest to me: "You know what I learned in Psychology today? 'Baby Can Read' is a lie. The whole thing is a scam."
Me: "I know."
The eldest: "Why didn't anyone tell me?"
Me: "You didn't ask."
The eldest." I feel like everything I've ever been told has been a lie." (where does she get that exaggerating thing from?)

and finally, (Drum Roll Please.)

Me to the middle child (my son): "Are you wearing my jeans?"
The middle child: "I don't know..."

Bend it like a pretzel, but break it in half :)

A big fat soft pretzel with salt and butter..... and dip it in some cheese while you're at it. With a Coke please. Not Diet Coke. Ick. Nothing diet. If you're going to do something, give it 100 percent, I say :)

Today's post is yet another admission-

I love food.

Now when I say I love food, I mean I love, love, LOVE food. Meat and potatoes, chips and sweets. The kind of food that is either cheesy, creamy or dipped in chocolate. Maybe sometimes all three :) No, I'm not pregnant (thank you, beautiful and kind God). It's just that lately I've heard lots of girls talking about diets and giving up certain food groups altogether. I have a teenager who looks in the mirror and seems to be more critical everyday of her appearance. (No need, she's gorgeous). But this makes me sad. (and panicky!)

As delicious food goes though,  I'm absolutely a believer that you should eat whatever you want- in moderation. It's the moderation part that's hard :)

On the other hand, I'm also a believer that we as a people need to get up and move. A lot. Adults are working crazy hours. Schools are eliminating recess. Kids are tied to electronic devices. I actually need to give a huge shout out to my mom who kicked us out of the house everyday and told us to "do something constructive". We never argued. Who wouldn't want to play outside until the house lights came on or until we were called home for dinner?

For me, it all fell apart starting in college. Remember the "freshman 15?" Well, mine was more like 20. Or twenty five. I could not wait to eat and then eat some more. I yo-yoed on every possible diet for the next 10 years. I dieted and starved myself and became hateful towards my body and eventually myself as a whole. I'm sure I ate everything then too. I just wasn't paying attention to how much of it I was eating. Instead of enjoying the food, I was using it to replace every emotion I could think of. It became my friend. The kind of friend that you don't tell anyone about, the one you sneak around with because they're nothing but trouble.

About 5 years ago, I was at a gym with my girlfriend who actually gasped when she saw how much I weighed. Granted, I'd just given birth- but it was the end of the line for me. I was humiliated and hormonal; emotional and unhealthy. I quit the gym. It had become to me a place where tanned, plastic size two people came to taunt me.  I realize now they were normal people, (most of them) who were trying to stay healthy. But at the time, I thought I was a complete failure. Who needs to pay 100 dollars a month to feel like that?

Before I quit, I took a few classes that introduced Yoga. The rooms were full of beautiful-looking people with the latest outfits and matching hair who could bend in ways that would make my husband rethink our marriage. I hated every minute of being there. But I LOVED the way I felt after each class. And so I was hooked.

I bought everyYoga DVD, book and item that could bring me that feeling of contentment. I learned how to stretch and meditate, how to move and feel every muscle in my body. Most importantly, I learned how to breathe. I discovered more about my self every time I practiced. (There's not much more you can do in some of those poses than to reflect on yourself.) I was dealing with some chronic health issues after my last pregnancy and found that the stretching and breathing helped immensely. For me Yoga, and let's be honest, a little bit lot of therapy worked. The weight came off. Baggage inside and out. I've come to realize that it doesn't matter what size I am- only that I feel happy and healthy. I don't  pretend to know what works for anyone else. Some people are happy vegetarians. Some people can run for miles. Some ride bikes or ski. Others can body build and kick box and cardio their little hearts out. But for me, yoga has helped me become aware. Aware of what and how I feel, of what I'm doing wrong in the world and also what I'm doing right. So yeah. I LOVE food. I LOVE yoga. And guess what?  I LOVE me :)

Ice Cream, anyone?

Happy Monday friends :)

Below are some pics of one of our room renovations. We are more than fortunate to have extra rooms in the house. This was the last family's office. It is now our home gym. The husband calls it my Yoga room. 100 dollars a month at an outside gym adds up- We've actually saved a lot by having it :)

By the way, that husband who NEVER once said a negative thing to me about my ever-changing appearance? He installed that awesome TV all by his lonesome. He is absolutely better than anything I could ask for in this house; or in this world, for that matter :)
