UYW June 2020: It's NOT Mac N" Cheese

Hey-O friends!
Today's post is a writing challenge created by Karen@Baking In A Tornado. 10 participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words for someone else to use in a post. All words must be used at least once. All posts will be different as each writer has received their own original set of words. No blogger knows who received their words or in what direction the writer will take them. Until, today.

My words are: control, grass, medical, rebate, furious

They were submitted by Karen@ Baking In A Tornado Thank you, my friend!

I've never been the kind of person who likes to shop just for the sake of "shopping." All of the people, all of the choices...it makes my anxiety go through the roof just thinking about it.

The introvert in me appreciates the conveniences and solitude of online shopping. This has never been more true than in these past few months with the Covid Pandemic. Some online stores deliver within a few days, some even take coupons and rebates. Others can come to your car and drop off stuff in your trunk! It's borderline magical. We've been able to buy our groceries, clothing, medical supplies, and many other things without crowds or time limits.  Hey, online in April, we even bought a new bed!Who knew shopping could be that easy?

My favorite thing about online shopping though, has been the ability to keep my Grams (age 90), who lives back in Michigan, well fed, adorably dressed, and hopefully needing for nothing more than company. She'll always call and update me with the food that she made from her Amazon pantry boxes, or about the conversations she has with the delivery people that are kind enough to put her boxes safely on an indoor porch.
***
I was returning to my house from a doctor's appointment when I saw that I had 2 voicemails. One was from my brother, Charley (who also lives in Michigan) and the other was from Grams.

Charley: "Hey Shell, Grams called me because she got some large boxes and can't bring them in the house. She's worried because the delivery people left them outside on the grass. It's raining here and she needs my help. Just wanted you to know that's what's up."

I text Charley: "No worries. I was trying to surprise her with that Mac N' Cheese she loves. I bought a 24 pack. It's probably awkward to lift. Thx so much for taking care of it. Wear your mask!"

Then I listen to my Gram's voicemail:
Grams: "Shelly, some boxes came and they're really big. It's starting to rain. Charley is going to try to help me...Did you buy me a new piano or something?...Call me, this is Grams." (She always tells me who she is at the end of her messages.)

That's weird, I thought. I was starting to call Grams back when a text came in from Charley.
Charley: "Um, it's NOT Mac N' Cheese."

When I saw the photo, my heart fell into my stomach. I knew exactly what was in those boxes. I could NOT believe it.

I must have accidentally sent my Grams the new bed I ordered for our home!

To Michigan, Not Utah.

You know, in all these years, I could have mistakenly sent her a yoga mat or some pop-tarts, but no. It had to be three boxes of an assemble-yourself bed!

It was completely my fault. I had sent Grandma something from this same online retailer before. When I ordered the bed for me, I must have seen her address and never thought twice about it. Grams had no control over what to do with the bed, so my brother brought it to his house until we could straighten everything out. I was beyond furious with myself. I told my husband that we'd just keep the same bed we've had for 20 years and I'd give this new one to Charley or Grams. But, truthfully, it was never going to fit in Gram's cute house and it definitely wasn't a style my brother would embrace. It's a green four poster. Yep, green.

So we returned it back to the retailer. When they credited our account, my husband said to order another one if I really loved it and he'd stand OVER me while I bought it, but they didn't have another green bed. I tried again a few days later and guess what? They did have one! (pretty certain it was the one I returned). After three weeks of back and forth, with me holding my head as low as it could go, that bed finally arrived at my house.

"You sure you want to go with green?" asked the man, while unpacking the boxes.
"Are you kidding me?THIS is the last green bed we are ever buying! Ever!" I say.

Or, you know, until one of the kids needs a bed.

BTW, my Grams laughed at the whole thing and asked when her Mac'N Cheese would arrive.
"Sooner than my bed, Grams."

Have a restful weekend, friends!
Love, Michele

Use Your Words: Small Celebrations

Hey-O friends!

Today’s post is a writing challenge created by Karen @ Baking in A Tornado.  8 participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words for someone else to use in a post. All words must be used at least once. All posts will be different as each writer has received their own original set of words. No blogger knows who received their words or in what direction the writer will take them. Until today.

My words are:

music ~ magic ~ dispel ~ dime ~ day-to-day basis ~ punish
They were submitted by the extremely creative Jenniy@ https://climaxedtheblog.blogspot.com

This little man is graduating with his engineering degree in a few weeks.
Now, as if by magic, he IS a man. I never can get over how quickly time passes. He's been working so hard in college, and now he's going to be on to his next endeavor.

We'd have to dispel the rumor that COVID-19 is ruining any graduating ceremony or party for him. It doesn't feel like a punishment to call off rounding up family, sending out invites, and expecting gifts from people he never sees.  We've always been a family without grandiose plans. For his high school graduation, Christian wanted to go to...a buffet. No joke. And he was as happy as a clam. I get that it is going to be truly difficult for many graduates this season; I'm so sorry for that.

I decided to plan out a truly grandiose party invite, and then change it up ala our "Stay At Home" orders that are in effect for the next little while.

Congratulations, Christian. Can't wait to celebrate with McDonald's or something.

Happy Friday, friends. Please stay safe.
-Michele

Funny Friday December 2019: Ruff Life

Hey O friends!

Today’s post is this month’s Funny Friday, a regular feature published on the last Friday of every month. Funny Friday is a collaborative project. Each month one of the participants submits a picture, then we all write 5 captions or thoughts inspired by that month’s picture. Links to the other bloggers’ posts are below, click on them and see what they’ve come up with. I hope we bring a smile to your face as you start your weekend.

Here’s today’s picture. It was submitted by me!

This is a photo of BallPark Frank, age 13

1.  BallPark: "Let a family rescue you, they said. They will treat you with dignity in your final years. Yeah, right."

2.  BallPark:  "I'll put on your silly outfit (ONCE!) for the low-low price of a Sirloin Steak."

3.  BallPark: "If any of the other hound dogs see this picture, my reputation as 'Alpha Dog' is over."

4.  Ballpark: "How do I simultaneously look like I hate this AND love how everything feels at the same time?"

5.  BallPark: "The humans bought ME jammies for Christmas too? Don't make eye contact or you'll cry. I really am part of a family!"

Happy New Year, friends!

Fly on the Wall June 2019

Welcome to the June Fly on the Wall Group Challenge. This month, 5  bloggers and I are describing what it would be like if you were to take a peek inside our homes...

Have a "look" around mine, and then go visit the other blogger's pages. There's always something fun, sentimental, or better yet, embarrassing going on. It's like your house, only we're admitting to the craziness. You have our permission. Buzz on over!

A cast of characters:
Me
The Man
Alexandra (daughter)
Christian (oldest son)
J. (the teenager)

At an appointment:
Doc: "I'm going to start you on this new medicine. Warning: It's not cheap."
Me: (looking at the name) "Hey, this is good. My husband makes this! Thankfully, it will be free."
Doc: (worriedly) "Um, what do you mean, 'He makes this?'"
Me: "He works for the company that makes that drug. A perk is that we get those prescriptions free. Why?"
Doc: "Whew. I thought by the way you said that he was making drugs in the basement. I was panicking there for a moment."
Me: "Nah. We only make crack in the basement." (joking, people.)

At the eyeglass store:
Kid at the counter: "Do you know Alexandra?"
Me: "Yes, she's my daughter."
Kid at the counter: "It's uncanny. you two look a lot alike."
Me: "We get that a lot"
Kid: (staring closely now) "It's weird...you look just like her except MUCH older."
Me: Thanks. A bunch.
***
We had the grandkids stay overnight:

See that adorable photo of the three of them? See how they look like they're almost asleep? Hahahahahahahaha. No chance.
Me: "Mark! We're so old. I don't remember the kids staying up this late. Are you tired?"
The Man: "I'm exhausted. Doesn't it feel like the longest day? The grands have so much energy."
J. : (rolling his eyes). Guys. It's only 8 o'clock.
***
Roaring Bubbles?
We've been wanting a hot tub for a LONG time. Usually, this is where I'd say. "By we, I mean ME!", but The Man is right there with me on this one. My doctor said we can write off the taxes we pay on it due to my "condition".  Let me tell you this is a first for a positive spin on that excuse! Anywhoo, we had to wait for the right time with money and added electricity, (also, money) but finally the day came and it's here. No joke this time. We can't wait to use it. After another trip to Michigan...
Water (and soul) therapy

Going back to the mitten:
I went back home in April to say goodbye to some special people thinking it would be a minute before I'd be back. However, my sweet grandpa Bonney passed on Tuesday morning. It always hurts when family passes, but I count myself as extremely blessed. I'm almost fifty and I had a grandpa this long. I cherish sweet memories of him. He was a hard-working father, grandpa, great-grandpa, and great-great-grandpa. His biggest wish was to join my grandma (his lovely wife) in heaven. I only cry for selfish reasons of not having him here. I know that he is dancing with grandma in heaven; likely with his own mama and papa watching over him.

Wrap your arms around your loved ones, friends.
See you next month.
-Michele

Fly on the Wall: August 2015

Hello, Friends!  Welcome to the August Fly on the Wall Group Challenge. This month, 13 awesome bloggers and I are describing what it would be like if you were to take a peek inside our homes....

The fly on the wall was in a lot of places this month. The last bit of summer seems to have that effect on insects and people.

Sarcastic Convos and Dreams:
Whether big or small, everyone had something to celebrate this month.

Micah, the son-in-law, was offered a coaching job at a local high school. According to him, a job pertaining to basketball is something that he has always wanted. (Well, besides having the undying love of his in-laws, but that's another story for another day.) Seriously, we are so proud of him.

This is a panorama of Alex's new classroom. She starts her dream job of being a teacher on Tuesday! Of course she still has dreams of being a dentist, an acrobat, and a hot air-balloon driver. She would also like to be related to the man who invented cheese curds. One day at a time, girl.

Texts from Alex during the week of her teacher training. She has just recently given up sugar and white flour (during the most stressful week of her new career.)

Alex: Mom. I'm hungry and the district is catering. My salad is mocking me.
Alex: Mom. They brought in bagels. And cookies. Is this a bad joke?
Alex: Errr. Pizza. You brought me up to never turn down free food, mom. Why is this happening?
Alex: Pasta today :(
Alex: I'm feeling better. Confident. I can do this!
Alex: Ok. The freaking Waffle Cart is here!!!

C.'s dream came partly true this month. He wants to finish school and become an astronautical engineer. He spent the better part of our trip to Florida at the Kennedy Space Center.
One day, he will be an employee.

C. says that he would drive this van and tell people he manned a vehicle for NASA.

He also said he'd even work the grill at the "Orbit Cafe," a restaurant at the space center.

C.: "I'll tell everyone I work for NASA. I'll say, "I'm pretty important. Without me, NASA wouldn't even function. You could say that NASA runs on my work. The instruments I work with get pretty hot, but it's a sacrifice I make daily for America.'"

C. in the hotel with his 9 dollar space blanket. Sucker.
***
J. has dreams too. He wanted to see a spacesuit. He wanted to live in Canada. (Don't ask.) He wanted to stay up all night and watch the Food Network. He wanted to fly on an airplane long enough to finish a movie. Oh, and he wanted to eat a pretzel as big as his head.
He almost got it all.
Who needs the Space Center when you can pose with a familiar name?

Canada ala' Epcot Center

Pretzel. Check.

J.: (on the plane): "You know what? I'm going to tell my wife to drive the kids when we go on vacation. I'm going to tell her I'll fly and meet her there. We probably won't fight that way."
C. : "You probably won't have a wife that way."

Finally:

The man: "Our anniversary is coming up. It's a big one! What are you thinking you'd like?"
Me: "Something big and shiny."
The man: "Something that will make people ooh and ahh?"
Me: "Yep."
The man: "Something bigger than your current ring?"
Me: "Um, yes!!"
The man: "So we're on the same page?"
Me: "After all these years, I certainly hope we are!!"

Fly on the Wall: May 2015

Hello, Friends!  Welcome to the May Fly on the Wall Group Challenge. This month, 16 amazing bloggers and I are describing what it would be like if you were to take a peek inside our homes....

Have a "look" around mine, and then go visit the other blogger's pages. There's always something fun, sentimental, or better yet, embarrassing going on. It's like your house, only we're admitting to the craziness. You have our permission. Buzz on over!

Questioning our eating habits:
The man and J. have a weekly donut date...
***
We offered to meet up one weeknight with our daughter and her husband for dinner. I was thinking of eating at a steakhouse or somewhere along those lines. The kids had other ideas. Every one wanted to go to an all-you-can-eat buffet. Really? Really. The downside of this was that I wasn't able to visit with any of the kids. They were too busy getting up and down, while eating all 16 possible courses the buffet offered. The upside was listening to the kids for the two days up until that dinner. They were texting and reminding each other to wear elastic pants and to not eat breakfast or lunch so they could fill up. It was much like preparing for a big event, except that they were preparing to eat three days worth of food in one sitting. It was, in their words, a "big success".
***
These were my actual Mother's Day cards from the kids. No vegetables or fruit, unless you count the flavors...
Look closely. The kids made all of that by hand!

Questioning our down-time:
I can't tell you exactly how many days it has rained this month (too many!) or what we have left in the fridge. I CAN tell you though, that my son introduced me to Netflix. I didn't want to go down that rabbit hole, but I did. I also can tell you anything you'd like to know about the 8 seasons of "Scrubs" or the first three seasons of "Chuck." I need help.
***
Remember the rule, "No animals on the sofas?" This is how you get around that.
Lucy balances on the man's hip.

Random Family Quotes:

"I'm at the game and there is a lull, but the lady in front of me (on her iPad) is on Tinder, so there's that."

"I'm sitting in a classroom and I kid you not. The teacher said the Sun is a planet."

"I was on Reddit and read about these crazy guys who eat oranges in the shower. I thought it was a little weird. (pauses for my reaction) I'm telling you in case you're wondering why my bathroom smells like citrus."

"Can fried dill pickles be considered a low-residue food if I chew them up really well?"

"I hate driving your car, Michele. I feel like I'm riding in a clown car. I took it early this morning and put gas in it for you. I felt ridiculous."

My friend texts me later : "Hey, I was on my way to work this morning and I saw Mark driving your car. His head was bent sideways. Tell him to put the top down before he breaks his neck."

Questioning where the time is going:
May really has been a crazy-busy month.

J. worked hard to get his 4th grade "Phd".

C. went to prom and will be a High School Senior tomorrow. No, he's not a vampire. My flash was on!

Alexandra is now a college graduate! She received her B.S. in Elementary Education.

3 words left for this crew: Bring on Summer!
