Fly on the Wall: April 2015

Hey-O!  Welcome to the April Fly on the Wall Group Challenge. This month, 14 amazing bloggers and I are describing what it would be like if you were to take a peek inside our homes....

Have a "look" around mine, and then go visit the other blogger's pages. There's always something fun, sentimental, or better yet, embarrassing going on. It's like your house, only we're admitting to the craziness. You have our permission. Buzz on over!

It will be a breeze...

That's what the man and I said when we decided to take down the playhouse that's been in our backyard for 10+ years. We had a week off for Spring Break and figured this would only take a day or so. Holy Hannah, people. We were so wrong.
So. So. Wrong. (This story is getting its own blog post.)
For now, here's a picture of the result:
Yep, that's a dumpster. Full of a playhouse.
Easter:

It was a really good day. Those of you familiar with my struggles with depression can understand how big this was for me.

Alex and her husband spent the night before coloring eggs with us.

After all of these years, I still Google the directions on boiling eggs.

I would show you all of the colorful, finished eggs, but Alex was ready for deviled eggs. These are my Pinterest-FAIL chicks. Eh, they were still delicious.

After church, Alex and her man came over for brunch. The weather was gorgeous. We were able to sit outside and eat in the sun. I may have mentioned this before. But when my children are wrapped around my table; when they are laughing at everything and nothing at all, I am at my happiest. My whole world was right in front of me. My heart was full.

The best laugh of the day was watching my children; all grown with their lanky bodies, pushing each other over to grab up plastic Easter eggs. There was yelling and pouting, racing and hiding. That was just the married kids. All for candy-filled plastic eggs. OK, so we may have mentioned the cash hidden in some of them...

The rest of the month was busy. Alex is finishing up her last few weeks of college. C. is cramming for his AP finals and J. is enjoying the rest of his fourth grade year. Other than J., I have to keep up with the others via text. Here are some of my favorite ones:

Texting with the kids:

Me to Alex: "I'm going to have to go ahead and agree with you. That woman has issues."
Alex: "So does Satan."
***
Alex to Me:"Do you have the recipe for your buttered noodles?
Me: "Yep. Are you ready? Cook noodles. Add butter."
***
Me to Alex: "I have a conundrum. I want to be a good citizen and all-around nice person,  but I also want to punch someone in the face."
Alex: "That's easy. Voo-doo Dolls. Can someone say, "Craft night?"
***
C. (from work): "Some person dropped an entire case of beer and I had to take it to the back, so if I come home smelling like Bud Lite, um, that's why."
***
Texting with my friends:

Me: I'm going on Tuesday for the Colonoscopy.
Friend #1: "I hope everything comes out all right!"
Friend #2 "That's a pretty crappy situation."
Friend #3 "Good Luck today! (with the poop emoji.)
***
Me to my Forever Friend: "I was flipping through channels earlier and saw the movie "Flowers in the Attic." I immediately thought of you. How old were we when we read those awful things?"
F.F.: "We had to be twelve. I can't believe we got away with reading that trash! I heard the movies are pretty cheesy."
Me: "They are. So I recorded all four."
FF: "Yes! Our poor kids. They'll never be able to remember such things. What will they say to their kids? 'Hey, remember when our moms let us go to the mail box by ourselves? Remember watching that rated PG movie?'"
Me: 'Hey, remember that time we went down the stairs without holding onto the railing?'
Our grand kids will probably be wrapped in cotton and bubble wrap. Rebels.

Finally:

We took the dogs for their yearly physicals. While they had lost a bit of weight, it wasn't enough to make the vet happy. He explained (again) to me that I'm not showing love to the dogs by giving them extra food. I nodded, knowing that's exactly what I do.

Out in the car:
The man: (patting his stomach) "Did you see the vet look at me while he was talking to you about food not equalling love? I swear he was looking at me."
Me: "Oh, that's not true. He's an animal doctor. He could care less how we look. Now let's get home. I just made you an apple pie."

Secret Subject Swap-August 2014 Yabba Dabba Doo!

If you're a regular reader, you know that the Secret Subject Swap is a collaboration between various bloggers. We receive secret topics from a blogger in a secret e-mail and put our own spin on the subjects. The 14 blogs participating this time are listed at the end of this post. Go have a look and leave a comment. It will make my our day! :)

My “Secret Subject” is:
If your life were a cartoon from YOUR childhood, which would you be and why?
It was submitted by: Dawn@ http://spatulasonparade.blogspot.com

If my life were a cartoon, it would be "The Flintstones". One could learn a lot from that stone-age family. I know I did. After watching reruns every day after school for years, I feel like I could safely walk the gravel streets of Bedrock today with confidence. Hmm. That probably explains a lot about me, right?

Here are 10 Cheesy Inspiring Life lessons I learned from Fred, Wilma and the gang:

1. Nothing is written in stone. If it is, drop that stone like it's hot and be flexible. The world is so much easier with some wiggle room.
2. Don't be afraid to lean on others. If you need a friend, call her up. It's amazing what can happen over a gab, a cup of tea or a day out on the town. Friends always help you see things in a new light. If not, they'll at least be there to hold your hand through the rough patches.
3. Shop Wisely. It's silly to buy 26 pairs of shoes when you're living the majority of your life barefoot.

4. Enjoy everything in moderation. Snack or have that special treat. When you do, savor it and then be done with it. It's not every day the McRib 300lb. ribs are in town...
5. Appreciate what you DO have. So your car doesn't have floorboards? Neither did my first car! (a cherry red Chevy Chevette that I jokingly called the Flintstone-mobile) Maybe your house is small or it feels like you're wearing the same outfit over and over. (Betty Rubble did that and rocked her look every single day.) You get to wake up every morning with a brand new chance to be grateful or inventive. I used a cookie sheet to cover the rusted floorboard of that first car. It makes me thankful to now be able to tap my feet to music in my present car. Strong floorboards. It's the little things.
6. Wear your hat like a boss. If you're an artist, a quarry worker, a doctor, a teacher, a parent or Grand Poobah of the Water Buffalo, be proud of what you do. Own your hard work and walk tall.

7. Don't sweat running in place. Sometimes it feels like we're not moving forward; barely balancing on tippy toes. Think of yourself as revving up for your next move.
8. Work hard, but play too.  As soon as you're off of your shift or even if you're just taking a break when you can fit it in, set the stress of the day aside; for the rest of the night or for the next five minutes. Be present so you can enjoy the things you're working so hard for. When you can, squeeze in a movie or go bowling. (using your twinkle toes, of course!) Build a fort. Paint or sing. Anything to escape for a bit. Oh, and for the love of all things leopard-print... please, please MAKE time to laugh!
9. It's okay to be a dinosaur! I still have an AOL e-mail address, people. I write my blogs in cursive before typing them. I love the feel and smell of a well-loved book. Those things are going by the wayside for the next generations, but I'm quite happy keeping some of my old habits.

10. Breathe. Times are hard. When you take care of you, you can take care of others. Those days when things get too hard... Maybe your job is driving you crazy or you're unemployed. Perhaps you are overwhelmed or lonely. You might feel helpless or find yourself talking to imaginary green martians. What if you aren't able to find your (or anyone in your town's) pants? Problems can be big or small...Don't give up. Contact a friend. Or a neighbor. Or your therapist. Scream into a pillow or meditate.  If you're me? Always, ALWAYS take your meds vitamins. :)
Smile, friends. Pants are overrated, anyway.

Thanks for the topic, Dawn!

Use Your Words- TMI version 3/14

Hello, friends!

Today’s post is a writing challenge created by Karen @ Baking in A TornadoThis is how it works: 12 participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, but there's a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who received their words and in what direction the writer will take them. Until now.

At the end of this post you’ll find links to the other blogs featured in this challenge. Check them all out, see what words they were given and how they used them.

My words/ phrases are:

dropping the ball ~ always needs reminding ~ bat(crap) crazy ~can you give me an amen sista?

They were submitted by: http://www.eviljoyspeaks.wordpress.com

About 7 years ago, I had a medical procedure done.
I know.
There was a time when I refused to talk on this blog about my health. I figured "eh." It's my blog and I trust my readers to laugh with me (not at me). Also, I'm pretty much guaranteeing that if you're having a bad day, this story will make you feel a bit better. When I feel down, I look back at this note and say, "Yeah. Today is not so bad." My mind always needs reminding that things could be worse.
Sometimes a laugh can make all the difference. This is an e-mail I sent (pre-blog) to a few friends describing the procedure. If you're not one for TMI, you may need to stop right here. But, let's be honest. Saying that just makes you want to read on, right?

Hi Girls!
Well, I'm a week out from surgery and still a little tired so I thought I'd send a quick update to let you know how things went. (SWELL, of course!)
I had an easy endoscopy (upper) on Thursday that went well. I have some gastritis and esophogitis (sp?), but thankfully no more polyps. (Insert here an advertisement for Prevacid, as that's what I'll be ingesting for, well, a very long time)Yeah! I won't have to have that procedure again. I just have to go back every three years for a colonoscopy. Hopefully, there will be a magic pill invented by then, that will not make me so..um..painfully empty.

On Friday, we went to the surgical center for the- girly stuff. I went in fully knowing that the doctor would perform an ablation and diagnostic laparascopy. We even talked about removing one of the cystic ovaries on my right side due to pelvic pain and ultrasound results.

So let's see- I somehow feel as though I should put this into verse- kind of like the "Twelve days of Christmas".... Come on, hum it with me...

In the hours after surgery my husband said to me...
Well, you STILL have both your ovaries...

In the hours after surgery my husband said to me...
you have stage 4 endometriosis,
but you still have both your ovaries...

In the hours after surgery my husband said to me (humor me, ok?)
one of your tubaligation clips fell off
and has been floating in your pelvis,
BUT you still have both ovaries!

In the hours after surgery my husband said to me...
Big breath now-
The doctor removed a lot of endo-
and a very large cyst,
he removed the floating clip,
and took a lot of pictures...
(I know this sounds bat-crap crazy, but it DOES get worse)…

"The doctors, dropping the ball."

oh, and when he did the ablation, you had a puffy cervix, the tubes somehow came off and now you have second degree burns all over your legs and va-jay-jay, BTW, do you think they have a vending machine in here? BUT....
get ready for it....
you get to keep both your ovaries!

"Do you have change for a dollar? -The man

Scorecard-
4, yes 4 needle holes. (couldn't get that big ol' I.V. in those little veins without a fight!)
2, Only 2 laparascopic belly scars- I will wear them with as much pride as the still glowing stretch marks..
A little bit of-( if a little is like a flowing river rapid)  discharge. Yes, I know. You could have lived without knowing it. But since I get to live it, you get to read it.
A whole lot of cramping. Thank you Percocet and thank you Jesus for letting it be invented.
1 mother-in-law who took my kids for two straight days!
A big ol' bottle of lidocaine for aforementioned va-jay-jay.
A bit of nausea and a lot of fatigue.
One very nervous gyno who swears on his life that this is only the second time in about 400 procedures where someone was burned by the ablation (boiling water). He said it was due to my very loose cervix. (Insert your own joke here)

I know it was an accident. He really was sorry.

Benefits from this experience-

The clip was probably causing a lot of the pain, and is now removed.
The endometriosis was everywhere and is mostly burned away. For now. Doc is sure it will come back. Did you know it can grow into your tissue and even on your lungs? I will eventually have to have the hysterectomy unless I can hold out til menopause. (I hear a challenge…)
I will no longer..(Can you give me an Amen, sista?)..have ANOTHER period again.

Anywhoo, I go back again in 9 days to revisit (we went yesterday) the gyno. We will then see if I have to have anything else done right away from the burn. I hope to talk him into giving me a copy of the surgery pictures as I'm sure they will make one hell of an awesome scrapbook!  Christmas cards, perhaps?

I miss all of you and I know this was long- but if you are still reading this, you really didn't have more pressing things to do, did you?

Take care of yourselves (I would like the attention to myself for awhile...)

All my love goes out to each of you.
Be strong, Love shel

Thanks for the phrases, Joy!

Always late to the party...

Man, friends. I know I'm a procrastinator, but this is a bit ridunkulous. Before the holidays, two of my blogger buddies invited me to play in their reindeer games. I was as excited as Rudolph, but truly, I do belong in the land of misfits, because…well, it's freaking January 8th and I'm just now getting around to playing. It's dark. There's an echo. I hear crickets in the distance. I'm the hare who fell asleep during the race.

Let's see. First of all, I was tagged by my friend Karen@ Baking in a Tornado. By now you should know, she really does exist and keeps kicking me in the butt to blog. She even made it easy by giving me ten questions to answer. Annnnnd yep. They're about Christmas.

Take a second to imagine, if you will, a magic snow globe that takes us back to October/November/December when people actually celebrated Christmas. I do realize that I am asking a lot since I can usually be found taking ornaments off the tree at 6:00 on Christmas night. But…keep reading, will you? Here we go…(jazz hands) Falling snow. Swirling snow. Backwards we travel…The Halloween candy has just been pulled off of the store shelves…and there we are. Christmas Season in full effect.

1. What do you love about Christmas time?
I could write forever about my family and celebrating the true meaning of Christmas. It's all a beautiful, holy time. I love that, but if I'm to answer the question honestly, it's easy. Christmas cookies. Any shape, most kinds. I pull on the elastic pants, happily accept plates from my neighbors, hide in my closet and go to town.

2. Do you celebrate the holiday in style or "bah humbug" your way through it?
Christmas cookies in the closet, people. If that doesn't scream panache, I don't know what does.

3. Are you leaving anything out for Santa this year in the hopes that he'll leave presents?
Milk. Carrots. Christmas cookies.

4. What is the one present you're excited to give?
I waited for months to surprise my husband with an old NES system from the eighties. My son helped me find gamers who had old games. The man was pretty happy. My favorite part was watching/helping  him make fun of the kids when Super Mario died or when they failed (miserably) at Tetris. I know, our parenting rocks.

5. What is your all-time favorite Christmas movie?
White Christmas. When else can you break into song on a train, fall in love after a modern dance AND support your Army General? And its all on a stage in a farmhouse in Vermont. So much better than shooting your eye out with a Red Ryder BB gun.

6. What's your favorite Christmas song?
When I taught Kindergarten, our song was always, "I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas". It still makes me smile when I hear it. My favorite Christmas carol is "Still, Still, Still" by ANY choir. I just love that song.

7. Would you participate in an Ugly Sweater Party? If yes, what would you wear?
There is a fine line between ugly Christmas sweaters and all of the holiday sweaters worn by elementary school teachers everywhere. I donated mine a few years ago. Snowman sweaters. Sweaters with trees that lit up. Jingle bells that jangled. Heck yes, I'd go to an Ugly sweater party, but only if I could hit up one of my teacher-friend's closets.

8. Any new traditions this year?
Because we have a lot of family to visit and because our children are growing and have places of their own to go to, we decided that anyone could go anywhere on any day to visit, but Christmas Day was ours. We spend the day in our pajamas, playing with our new gadgets, napping, snacking and just being together.

9. It's Christmas morning. What does it look like outside of your house?

Cold!

10. You find yourself under the mistletoe. Who comes up to give you a first kiss?
Okay. You KNOW I'm going to say the dogs. And then my kids. But I have this cheesy picture of the man and me sitting on my Instagram, so let's go with that. Even though it was taken on New Year's Eve. We're time travelers, remember?

One wants a kiss, the other is mortified :)

Thanks for the tag, Karen!

I've been "Jingled," y'all!

The second tag was from the lovely Cassandra @ Dates 2 Diapers. Cassandra picked a few bloggers and mentioned two nice things about them. That really is a sweet idea. I'm also supposed to list 4 things about myself and jingle a few others. Now. We know I'm too late for that. But I invite anyone to borrow this idea and get "Jangled". I love what Karen says. These tags are compliments. Participation is voluntary. (Whew!!)

Four things about me:
*I put on 4 pounds over the holidays from eating cookies. I have no idea why.
*My daughter and I open windows and knock down icicles with NERF swords because we have zero installation rock like that.
*With my soul, I love crossing out words and phrases stuff.
* Cherry Coke. Why can't I quit you?

I couldn't list all of my favorite bloggers. Some are on my sidewall, some are on Twitter, FB or in my head ;)  This is such a fun community, the blogging world. I laugh and cry, relate and communicate with many talented people. That's a Christmas gift all by itself.

If it wasn't for Karen, I wouldn't have written anything in the last six months. She's kept me chugging along on the blog and in the real world. She emails me to see if I still have a pulse. She bakes. Sweets. And gives the recipes. She writes and makes me laugh. Need I say more?

Slu @ Slu's World… Slu is a wonderful man who is in love with his wife and his family. He writes about that and all of his journeys. He always leaves his readers with a smile, an idea for a good meal or libation and the latest FB stock changes. Slu, you had me at , "I'm not a Cowboy's fan…"

Marcia @Menopausal Mother.  Marcia's stories usually make me laugh until I have tears in my eyes. As a fairly new, ahem, member of meno-land, Marcia writes relatable stories about "the best years of her life" :) Check out her blog on an empty bladder. She's a gem.

Ashley@ Sorry Kid, Your Mom Doesn't Play Well With Others. First of all, how wondrous is that blog name? I've read Ashley's blog for as long as I can remember. She is raw, honest and tells the stories of life at home with her 6 kids. (God bless her.) I always try to leave Ashley funny comments because she deserves them. If you don't like potty language (literally!), don't visit. If you are awesome and love the gut-busting side of motherhood, grab a diet coke and run to her site.

Sarah @ The Momisodes- Sarah is my twin blogger. She loves her coffee and her episodes of Friends. She sets her snooze at nine minute intervals and takes full advantage of using them. That right there demands my respect. She has differing opinions on certain topics and isn't afraid to talk about them. She is simply wonderful.

Thanks for thinking of me, Cassandra!

There isn't enough space to talk about all of the spectacular blogs/bloggers out there. I'm going to do what I can to share others with you in the future.

Is it Easter yet?

Happy Thursday, friends.

Fly on the Wall-October!

Hey there!  Welcome to the October Fly on the Wall Group Challenge. This month, 13 awesome bloggers and I are describing what it would be like if you were to take a peek inside our homes....

Have a "look" around mine, and then go visit the other blogger's pages. There's always something fun, sentimental, or better yet, embarrassing going on. It's like your house, only we're admitting to the craziness. You have our permission. Get in there!

Cast:
Me
The man
A., the eldest (daughter, 19)
C., The middle (son, 15)
J., The youngest (son, 8)
Our dogs: Lila and Henry

If you were a fly on the wall at my house this month, you would have witnessed all kinds of GOOD and BAD news...

Crosswords:
I'm obsessed with crossword puzzles. Every night I try to do a few; just to see if my brain still works. One night, I checked the next puzzle (in order) and it was completed with letters that didn't make any sense. I looked at it for a minute before figuring out that J. must have filled out a page by himself.
The good news-
*I'm not quite as crazy as I thought.
*I can confirm that crosswords should always be done in capital letters.
The bad news-
*My son may be dyslexic or a coding magician.
*My son doesn't know who wrote "The Raven".

Birthday Boy:

Portal- "The cake is a lie."

It was J's birthday last weekend. He turned nine and said it was his best birthday ever.
The good news:
*I scored major points making a portal cake. I had no idea what that was, but apparently, I follow decorating directions well enough.
The bad news:
*C. and A. were AWOL for the day.
The good news:
*They both called to wish J. a Happy Birthday.
The bad news:
* I got yelled at by the middle child because I never made him a portal cake.

Legos:
Yep, my son scored for his birthday in the Lego department. (Because he didn't have very many ten million to start with...)
The good news:
*We surprised J. and his friends by visiting the new Lego store in town.
*J's friends surprised him with the Lego Sets he's been begging for.
The bad news:

*Mom is an OCD freak who has to make sure all the pieces are accounted for before building sets. (She's a real drag.)

*Mom found out that being OCD is FABULOUS fun and sorting Legos by color and shape rocks. This unintentional finding gave the boy one less Lego set to build.

New loft beds for the boys:
Two boys sharing one room can be very trying when one is a teenager and the other is not. We decided to build the boys lofts so they could take advantage of having more space.

The good news:
*The lofts look amazing and we're all still alive to tell the story of building them.
*It's so nice to have things a bit more organized.
The bad news:
*IKEA's directions were a bit difficult for this spacial genius and I almost was built into the desk that accompanies the loft.
*It's not any fun listening to my children joke for the rest of the day about how I should be on the shows , "I Shouldn't Be Alive!" or "127 hours."
Quote from Jo, "Life Alert! I've got my head stuck in a table and I can't get out!"
Quote from C. "Has this ever happened to you? Of course it hasn't. Who drops a desk top on their face?"
The better news:
* How awesome would my obituary be?
*All of the teasing may or may not have resulted in a few loose screws. Allen wrenches aren't perfect, you know.

Are you ready for some football?

We're not sure what exactly inclined us to invite our best friends over for a great game of Lion's football; especially when aforementioned friends are green bay fans. (Yeah, I can't capitalize it.) But we did.
The good news:
*They ARE our best friends, so there was a lot of food, kids and cheering to be had.
The bad news:
*The cheering wasn't from us. We were missing our key player, Mega-tron. Our Lions didn't roar.
*I love my friends a bit less than I love my Detroit Lions...
*Final Score: Detroit 9, green bay 22.
We'll see them back right here on Thanksgiving day!

Finally, A few of my favorite quotes from "Homeschool":

J: "Mom, I'm supposed to imagine myself in a story, but this one is a scary story. Is it okay if I put C. in it instead?"

J: "This says there is an amazing singer in Seattle. We should go."
Me: "Why do you want to go see a singer in Seattle?"
J: "Not for me mom, for you. There must be something really special about that sewing machine..." (Singer, get it?)

J: "They actually put eggs in their paintings back then? (fresco) That's gross. Scrambled eggs are nasty even a little bit cold. Those places probably stink!"

J: "I may change my idea about who I want to be when I grow up. I just can't make up my mind..."
Me: "You know what? That's okay. I think about doing something new every day"
J: "You're lucky, Mom. You're a grown up and can be ANYTHING you want, any day."

Epiphany. Thanks, J.
